Who we are

Katherine Low Settlement is a much-loved, busy charity that has been at the heart of the community in Battersea, London, since 1924. We work to reduce poverty and isolation and bring the community together. Our core programmes support older people, children, young people and their families from refugee backgrounds and newly-arrived adults learning English: over 500 people a week visit our building. We campaign for social change and we partner with other charities and communities to help them to thrive in the wider community.

Our Vision, Mission, Values Statement

We exist to create an inclusive society where the communities of Battersea and Wandsworth achieve their potential together. We foster and empower our local community to reduce poverty and isolation. We stand for kindness, respect, collaboration, and sustainability.

Abby Cable – Vice President

“KLS plays a key role in enabling our community to work together and look out for one another. It’s a privilege to be able to apply skills learnt in the workplace to such a worthwhile organisation and to be part of a talented and dedicated team at an exciting stage in its evolution.”

Abby is a neighbour of KLS. She joined the Board in 2016, becoming Vice Chair in 2017, Chair in October 2024 and since April 2026 has been the Vice President. She has a background in strategy and healthcare and is a director at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.

Trustees

Vicky Newbery - Chair

“Living in Battersea, I was occasionally involved at KLS. When the call came for new Trustees, with HR skills, I was keen to get involved. I have been hugely impressed by the professionalism and commitment of staff and volunteers. The lifeline that KLS offers to members across the ages is essential for the community. I am determined to play my part in helping KLS to continue for the next 100 years.”

Vicky joined the board in October 2024, became Vice Chair in 2025 and Chair in April 2026. She has 18 years of generalist HR experience and is a SEN trained teacher. She is the trustee safeguarding lead.

Martin Alcock - Treasurer

“I first got involved with KLS as a learning mentor in the Love to Learn programme, supporting young people from refugee backgrounds with their studies. I was immediately blown away by the team’s commitment to helping families in the community, and so it was an honour to join the board of trustees, to help out.”

Martin has been a Trustee since 2019 and runs a consulting business helping companies in the travel industry.

Mary Foley - Trustee

“I have worked with KLS in a volunteer capacity for a number of years and see first-hand the impact of the important services they provide to the local community. I feel privileged to be involved with such a dedicated team and applied to be a trustee to have the opportunity to contribute in a broader capacity.”

Mary is retired and spent her working years mainly in leadership roles in the public and voluntary sectors, specialising in business process improvements and change management.

Emily Lewis – Co-Vice Chair

“Living close to KLS means I have seen the important work the charity does in the local community. I joined the KLS Board to give back to the local community where I live and offer my communications skills.”

Emily develops and delivers successful strategies for global brands, mid-sized businesses and niche start-ups within the beauty industry. She is currently part of a leading communications agency.

Sarah Lacaille – Trustee

“I was honoured to work with KLS on the marketing & PR plans for its 100th anniversary year, which included helping to organise the visit of HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh. I realised then what a special place KLS is and how important its role in helping the Battersea community is. As a trustee I want to support KLS further.”

Sarah is a PR & Marketing Consultant with an MBA in Marketing and has over 40 years’ experience working with travel, luxury lifestyle, new companies and charities.

Francis Holland School, Sloane Square, and St Mary’s Church, Battersea are long-standing partners of KLS so the School Head and Vicar attend Board meetings in a non-trustee capacity, as trustees in attendance, to give their valuable insight.

Alexandra Haydon - Trustee in Attendance

“KLS has been at the heart of the Battersea community for over a century, and its values of service, inclusion and opportunity are as important now as they were when it started. It is a privilege to support an organisation with such a strong legacy, and to contribute to its continued impact for future generations.”

Alexandra is Head of Francis Holland Sloane Square, a girl’s school that has supported KLS since its inception. She attends the Board as a Trustee in Attendance, bringing extensive experience in education, leadership and partnership, and the school’s longstanding commitment to the KLS mission.
